Candelaria Caves

Cancuen is located southwest of Peten at the end of the Pasión River in the municipality of Sayaché. Its name means "Land of snakes" and was the center of trade between the lowlands and highlands.

This City won power by making alliances with the royal families of Dos Pilas, and other cities, also dominated the trade in jade, obsidian (for tools and weapons) and Pyrite (to mirror), from the Highlands. This meant that its inhabitants enjoyed a high purchasing power, as demonstrated by implants dentures Jade artisans and other characters not belonging to the nobility, which in other cities was reserved for the ruling class.

The Candelaria Caves are located near Raxrujá and Chisec, Alta Verapaz, 2 ½ hours from Flores, Petén. The cave was considered by the ancient Maya to be the entrance to the underworld of Xibalba, and the cave contains archaeological sites, where the Río Candelaria goes underground.
