provides essential tips for a successful trip to Guatemala

Entrance Formalities Valid passport, with or without Visa, depending on the case (The cost of the visa is of $5.00 US). Consult the embassy or consulate near you. No immunization certificate needed to enter the country. The exit taxes via air are of $30.00 and Q20.00 for local flights.

Currency The national currency is the Quetzal; it has coins of Q.0.01, Q0.05, Q.0.10, Q.0.25, Q.0.50 cents, and Q.1.00. However, the North American dollars are accepted. Unlike the US dollars, the European currency, Euros accepted only in very few places and their exchange rate is very low.

Commercial schedules Banks operate on a Monday to Friday basis, from 9:00am to 7:00pm. On Saturdays from 10:00 am to 2:00pm. 24 hour ATMs are available.

Commercial offices: generally open from 8:00am to 12:00 and from 2:00pm to 5:00pm. Shopping centres and business: open from 08:00am to 9:00pm.

Tip It is habit to leave 10% to 15% tip of the service (it is not usually included within the price of the foods or any other type of service).

Means of Payment Although the dollar is generally accepted, the exchange of foreign currencies to national currency is carried out in banks and authorized agencies. The credit cards frequently accepted are, VISA, Diners and Master Card. Traveller checks are also welcome.

Electricity In general, the electricity is of 110 volts of 60 cycles and in some cases 220 volts. It is advised to all tourists to bring current converter if their kit doesn’t bring it.

If travelling to Guatemala for the first time you should consider the following aspects to enjoy your stay.

What to wear

If travelling in the summer time (generally March - September) it is recommended to bring fresh clothes and comfortable shoes for during the day it is very hot, and the nights the temperature might get a little bit chilly.

If it travelling on the months November to February it is mostly rainy in the afternoons so rain protection is recommended. It is very important to know in which season you are going to be visiting the country.

 
  Repellent

It is important to consider some type of repellent to protect your skin from insects. The mosquitoes are usually near the rivers, are humid areas

Others

We strongly recommend bringing your Photographic cameras and if it is a specific brand we recommend you to brig enough film, otherwise it is very easy to get it from the stores and supermarkets in the area.

Bring a lantern and a water bottle for your tours. Have essential medications on hand.
